The Anson Light
Located near Abilene, Texas, the Anson Light is a “weird or strange light” type of haunting. The Anson light is apparently bluish colored and located near a cemetery. Apparently, the Anson Light is a residual haunting. According to some locals, the Anson light is a ghostly communication between a mother and her son who worked nearby on the railroad. The son would flash his lantern at his mother three times to let her know he was on his way home. The mother would flash her lantern back at him to let him know that she had gotten the message.
Another story regarding the Anson Light was that a mother took a lantern out in the cold of winter to search for her child, who was lost. The mother never found her child and still searches for him/her, thus the Anson Light. This particular piece of lore is related in many ways to White Lady tales that are prevalent throughout the United States. Rather than lights haunting a location, in White Lady tales, a ghostly white lady is often seen searching for her lost child, or occasionally a lost lover.
Abilene, Texas is in the central part of the state. Abilene is north of San Antonio and west of Fort Worth, Texas. The Anson Light can actually be seen in Anson, at the Mount Hope Cemetery, which is eighteen miles southeast of Hamlin, Texas at the junction of US-180.
As one drives toward the cemetery, the Anson Light is said to disappear without explanation. Some locals claim that in order to see the Anson Light you must flash your headlights toward the cemetery, however, the Southwest Ghost Hunters Assocation, said that in their experience this was not the case. The Southwest Ghost Hunters Association is based in Texas and they provide an interesting and detailed description of their investigations of the Anson Lights.
