Foster, Rhode Island

Foster is located in Providence County, Rhode Island. It is a small community of about 5,000 residents.

Ramtail Factory Ruins | Foster Woolen Factory:

The Ramtail Factory Ruins are approximately 15 miles from Providence, Rhode Island. The Ramtail Factory Ruins are situated on the extreme western boundary of Rhode Island, bordered by Killingly and Sterling in Connecticut.

In 1799, the Potter Family started the Foster Woolen Factory. Peleg Walker, the Potter's son-in-law began working in the factory in 1810. He was the nightwatchman and he was responsible for keeping an eye on all the buildings, carrying his lantern and keys around checking on things. In the morning he then rang the bell to summon the workers. Shortly after he began working for the Potters, on May 18, 1822 Peleg Walker hung himself inside the factory. He had been in a conflict with another person at the factory and he had made a comment about “taking the keys out of a dead man's hand”. He hung himself from the bellrope, with the keys hanging visibly out of his pocket.

After Peleg Walker's suicide, the Potter family reported being awakened at mid-night to the sound of the bell ringing. So they removed the bellrope. The bell still rang. So they removed the bell. Then they awoke in the night to the sound of their factory running full tilt, the water wheel turning against the flow of the river.

The apparition of Peleg Walker was reported several times.

In the 1880's the Foster Woolen Factory was mysteriously destroyed by fire.

The Rhode Island 1885 census reported that the Foster Woolen Factory was haunted.

The area near the Ramtail Factory Ruins is protected by the Providence Water Supply Board. No trespassing is allowed. Get permission to visit this location.

The 1885 State Census page is 36. The area in question is not owned by the water supply board. That is the ruins of an old farm. Ramtail Factory and village is on the other side of the property. There is a wheel race, the ruins of five millhouses, a blacksmith shop, and a wall that was part of the company store. Peleg went into a partnership with his in-laws in 1813 after William Potter purchased land for the site from Parley Round. Peleg Walker died on May 19, 1822. One evening before, two documents were drawn up, transfering his holdings and land to William Potter and Olney Potter, Peleg's brother-in-law. These documents were drawn up and signed at 12:45 a.m. This would be a very odd time to do any work of the sort as the lighting at the time was candles. Kerosene lamps did not come into useage until 1853. Strangely enough, Olney Potter died suddenly on May 19, 1831; nine years to the day after Peleg Walker. Paranormal United Research Society has investigated the real Ramtail property several times and has recorded some amazing EVPs along with the witnessing of what appeared to be the glow of a candle lantern while working on the Haunted RI documentary. The daylillies the women planted back in the early 1800s still bloom to this day.
