About Oregon State Hospital
Salem is the capital of the state of Oregon in the northwestern part of the state. It is the County Seat of Marion County, located along the Williamette River which runs through the center of the city.
Salem was founded in 1842 and became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851. The city of Salem was incorporated in 1857. Today, it has a population about about 137,000 residents.
Oregon State Hospital:
The Oregon State Insane Asylum was built in 1883. Although some of the wings of this facility have been closed off and are no longer in use due to deterioration, much of the building is still used today to house the Oregon State Hospital. The hospital was used as part of the set in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
About 2/3 of the inpatients at Oregon State Hospital were found to be guilty of a crime, but ruled insane. The other 1/3 were deemed a danger to themselves or others.
In 2005, the adolescent treatment ward was closed down such that the Oregon State Hospital would only accept patients over the age of 18 years.
