About Lock 4

Canal Fulton, Ohio

Canal Fulton is located in northeastern Ohio in Stark County. It is a small community of approximately 6,000 residents.

Lock 4 Information:

Lock 4 is located south of Canal Fulton in Stark County, Lawrence Township in Ohio.

According to Dead Ohio, there is saying about the Ohio and Erie Canal:

“For every mile of the canal, an Irishman is buried.”

Apparently, Dead Ohio explains, Irish immigrants primarily worked on the canal. It was difficult work and many of them died of diseases. They were buried along the canal or in mass graves.

The Ohio and Erie Canal were constructed between 1825 and 1832. The functionality of the canals was significantly diminished by the development of the railroad systems. Most of the canals were wiped out during the Great Flood of 1913. Lock 4, however was able to survive and remains functional, in that its mechanisms are still in working order (sort of). It is now located inside a park that is open in the summer during daylight hours.

Ghosts and the Paranormal at Lock 4 in Canal Fulton, Ohio:

According to one source, a number of men worked on Lock 4 south of Canal Fulton in Ohio. One man was particularly angered when the government endeavored to shut down the project. The man is said to have burned himself and others with acid, killing some of the men. He and these men purportedly still haunt Lock 4 in Canal Fulton, Ohio. We have not verified whether there was a man who burned and killed other men with acid, however, there were homicides that took place. Dead Ohio notes the allotment of whiskey given to Irish workers as an instigator of a number of homicides that took place during construction of the canals.
