The St. Joseph River (there are two St. Joe Rivers in Indiana, one in Ft. Wayne and one in South Bend, which empties into Lake Michigan) in South Bend is a beautiful river with a curse on it. Legend has it that three Potowatami Indian maidens (who were noted for their excellant swimming skills) drowned in the river. Although it is very scenic,locals know not to disrespect the river. Every year, at least three people drown in that river, although most years a dramatically high number drown, and the river is not used much for swimming, as its current is very treacherous.
